Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; Miriam Matthews, Los Angeles; thence by descent to the current owner.

Nathaniel Bustion is known for his work in painting, sculpture and ceramics, often using mixed media in clay, concrete, wood, and copper, and printmaking. Born in Gadsden, Alabama, he attended Colorado State University, Belgium Antwerp Academy of Art and the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles. An active Los Angeles area artist through the 1970s, Bustion exhibited at the Brockman Gallery, the Los Angeles Municipal Gallery and Heritage Gallery, and taught at the Otis Institute, Los Angeles City College, and Pomona College. His artwork has been included in numerous museum group exhibitions including the African American Museum in Philadelphia, the California African American Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Riverside Art Center and the Studio Museum in Harlem.
