Virginia-born Nell Blaine moved to New York in 1942 to study painting with Hans Hoffmann. She was the youngest member of the American Abstract Artists, and was a founding member of the Jane Street Gallery. After contracting polio in 1959, Blaine was told she would never paint again, but she was strong enough to draw and paint with watercolors. She was the first art director of the Village Voice, and in 1955, designed their original masthead and layout.
