Additional Details

At just 21, a determined and talented Nell Brinkley came to New York upon the invitation of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. Given the freedom to "draw any kind of pictures [she wanted] to make," Brinkley's illustrations often accompanied her own commentary column in the New York Evening Journal. Her commentary focused on women, casting a much-needed spotlight on their thoughts, experiences, and matters as they sought increasing autonomy.

Her recognizable style primarily featured beautiful, curly haired young women. The Brinkley look became so popular that a line of hair curlers named for her were released for young women who wished to emulate the look she made famous.
