NETHERLANDISH SCHOOL, LATE 16TH-CENTURY
St Jerome in Penitence.<>

Black chalk heightened with white chalk on cream laid paper prepared with a gray wash, circa 1590s. 280x181 mm; 11x7¼ inches. Dated 1594, corrected from 1591, in ink, lower right recto. Italian (?) 3 hills and a cross watermark.

Possibly by a follower of Frans Floris (1520-1570). The facial type, the loose handling and the broadly hatched shadows are reminiscent of drawings by Floris, notably one in Munich (Wegner 49, pl. 25) executed similarly in black chalk, partly washed gray with traces of white heightening.
