NEWMAN, JOHN HENRY; CARDINAL. Autograph Letter Signed, "JohnH Newman," to William Cope ("My dear Sir William"), thanking for sending bound copies of a work, discussing the translations for a Breviary by Robert Williams and Samuel F[rancis] Wood [never published], and offering to send a copy of his letters on the Crimean War. 3 pages, 12mo, written on a folded sheet; faint scattered bleedthrough. "The Oratory" [Birmingham], 14 August 1871
"Thank you for the copies . . . so handsomely printed, a compliment which is above the merit of compositions themselves. . . . "The translation of the Breviary was the work of Robert Williams of Bridehead, Dorsetshire, and Samuel F. Wood . . . . I supplied the translation of the Hymns. When it had advanced a certain way, [John?] Keble . . . interfered & it was abruptly stopped. My own copy . . . is just like your friend's. It has no title page, and ends abruptly at p 192 . . . . "Did I ever mention to you some letters of mine on the Crimean War? They are likely . . . to be re-published . . . ."
