NICOLÒ BOLDRINI (after Titian)
Saint Jerome in the Wilderness.

Woodcut, circa 1530-31. 398x537 mm; 15 3/4x21 1/4 inches. A brilliant, richly-inked and early impression of this extremely scarce woodcut, with little to no sign of wear and with the relief from the block distinct on the verso, consistent with the earliest impressions. Trimmed on the outer edge of the black border line.

Based on Titian's (1490-1576) same-titled painting commissioned by Isabella d'Este in 1523 and completed by the artist in 1531, now in the Louvre, Paris. Muraro/Rosand note that the woodcut by Boldrini was likely created contemporaneously with Titian's painting, through an association between the artist and the printmaker.

We have found fewer than 10 other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Muraro/Rosand 29.
