Folio, 16 3/4x10 3/4 inches, contemporary red morocco richly gilt with the Borghese arms in a central panel, minor repairs; maps slightly foxed; later armorial bookplate, M.A. Principis Burghesii. Rome: Michaelis Herculis, 1671

Additional Details

A very attractive copy of the second edition of Nicolosi's scarce atlas. The maps largely follow the earlier cartography of Nicolas Sanson, omitting any decorative elements. The map of North America is the earliest printed map to correctly depict the entire course of the Rio Grande flowing south-east from New Mexico and emptying in the Gulf of Mexico. The volume is all the more extraordinary in its contemporary Borghese-crested Rospigliosi binding. Shirley 418; Burden 354, 355; Wheat TMW, vol. 1, pages 41-42.
