NIKLAUS STOECKLIN (1896-1982) META. 1941.
49 3/4x35 inches, 126x90 cm. Wassermann A. G., Basel.
Condition B+: creases in margins and image; staining at edges. Framed.
Meta was a company that produced a popular cooking briquet used for camping and outdoor parties and is still manufactured today by the Lonza Group of Switzerland. Stoecklin designed two posters for them, the first simply showing a hyper-realistic close-up of a briquet and a match on a blue background. This second one, which is rarely seen, depicts a pot on a burner with a Meta briquet ready to be lit by a match. In depicting this mundane object, Stoecklin employs the pure, bold and hyper-realistic style that was a hallmark of the Swiss New Objectivity movement of which he was one of the progenitors.
