NIKLAUS STOECKLIN (1896-1982) SPRINGKONKURENZ. 1921.
50 1/2x35 5/8 inches. W. Wassermann, Basel.
Condition A-: repaired tears and creases in margins. Two sheets.
After studying in Munich, Stoecklin settled in Basel as a painter, but found that his star as a poster designer rose much faster. He became one of the most prolific Swiss designers (designing a total of 116 posters) and was also one of the most versatile. This very early poster by Stoecklin is done in a graphic style involving a variation on the cut-out technique in which he uses only three colors and the white of the paper. Advertising a two-day equestrian event, the design reflects popular imagery, with no real concern for realism, proportion or perspective. Given the brief duration of the event, not many copies of this poster would have been printed. Stoecklin 74.
