[4 October 1944]: ". . . You enjoy and buy the books that would not have been written but for the power of self sacrifice of people like me. What do you bring to the world? The weight of your neurotic personality. One cannot even enjoy a relationship with you.
"I once interpreted your neurosis as coming from spiritual guilt and discontent. I thought you wanted to be the artist, and I felt pity for your desire to become something else. But your attitude towards my struggle, your selfish enjoyment of a personality created by unselfishness . . . revealed the truth. . . ."
