NORMAN LEWIS (1909 - 1979)
Fireflower.

Oil on canvas, 1949. 915x655 mm; 36x25 inches. Signed and dated in oil, lower right.

Provenance: gift from the artist, private New York collection.

In 1949, Norman Lewis had his first solo exhibition at the Willard Gallery in New York, where such internationally known artists as Lionel Feininger, Morris Graves, Mark Tobey and David Smith exhibited. Other early compositions from the late 1940s, such as Pussy Willows and Green Mist, also shifted between organic and linear forms as Lewis refined his Abstract Expressionist idiom.
