NORMAN LEWIS (1909 - 1979)
I'm beginning to see the light.

Oil and ink on thin wove paper, 1959. 445x597 mm; 17 1/2x23 1/2 inches. Signed and dated in ink, lower right recto. Titled in pencil, upper left verso.

Provenance: Willard Gallery, New York, with the label on the frame back; private collection, Vermont; thence by descent to the current owners.

This dramatic oil on paper is excellent example of Norman Lewis continued exploration of processional subjects in the late 1950s. This nocturnal scene should be noted for its distinctive title, and the use of the crescent moon in his composition - found in many of Lewis' 1950s promenade compositions.
