NORMAN LEWIS (1909 - 1979)
Two Barns.

Watercolor on cream wove paper, 1937. 450x570 mm; 17 3/4x22 1/4 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right.

Provenance: private New Jersey collection.

Norman Lewis traveled throughout the rural areas outside of Greensboro, North Carolina while teaching there in 1937. There are few known watercolors from this early period; Lewis also did a related series of lithographs that year, including Madame, Southern Landscape and Woman with a Cup. We have found only one other auction record for a WPA-era painting by Norman Lewis, another landscape, also dated 1937.
