NORMAN LEWIS (1909 - 1979)
Untitled (Umbrella).

Lithograph on cream wove paper, 1945. 300x412 mm; 11 3/4×16 1/4 inches, wide (full?) margins. Proof, with no known edition. Signed, dated and inscribed "To Stelle and Al from Joan & Norman" in pencil, lower right.

Provenance: gift from the artist; private collection, New York, thence by descent to a private collection, Maryland. "Joan" is Joan Murray, a pyschology graduate student whom Norman Lewis was in a relationship from with 1945 through the early 1950s.

This rich, darkly-inked impression is a wonderful example of Norman Lewis' early experimental work in lithography. Ruth Fine included another proof, an unsigned impression, in the retrospective Procession: The Art of Norman Lewis from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. We have not located another impression of this extremely scarce print. Fine 16; p. 138 and 253.
