NORMAN ROCKWELL (1894-1978) LET'S GIVE HIM ENOUGH AND ON TIME. 1942.
28 1/2x39 3/4 inches, 72 1/2x101 cm. U.S. Government Printing Office.
Condition B+: tape affixed in margins and on verso; sharp vertical and horizontal folds.
This poster was designed and printed "In 1942 [when] the Army Ordinance Department initiated a program for greater production of ordinance materials . . . By special arrangement, a machine gun was sent to Rockwell's studio in Arlington, Vermont as a model for the artist . . . Rockwell thought the gun was a bit too clean for combat and depicted it dirtied up a bit. To his surpirse, the gunners themselves objected stating 'a soldier takes care of his firearms as a cavalryman takes care of his horse.' The machine gun was thus painted in pristine condition reflecting this pride in equipment" (West Point p. 72). Judd C. 10, West Point p. 72.
