NORMAN WILKINSON (1882-1971) LONDON / ST. PAUL'S CATHEDRAL. 1925.
39 3/4x49 1/2 inches, 101x126 cm. McCorquodale & Co., Ltd., England.
Condition B: loss in upper right corner; tears, minor losses, foxing and creases in margins; pin holes in corners. Paper.
A view "from upstream of Blackfriar's Bridge, looking east, so the towers of St. Paul's West Front and the magnificent dome are emphasized . . . the elegance of the columns and symmetry between the west towers and the dome rising above, create the majesty of this wonderful structure. Wilkinson's choice of a cool palette is broken by the afternoon sun highlighting part of the bridge, the central buildings, some of the tops and reflections in the Thames. It is a beautifully composed poster, one in a series of London subjects produced by [Wilkinson] a time when the LMS was going head-to-head with the LNER to promote London" (Furness vol. 5, p. 67). Furness vol. 5, p. 67, Tourism p. 44, Posters & Publicity 1928 p. 83 (var).
