The authors subscribed to the notions of polygenesis, or multiple origins of racial diversity, and the fundamental inequality of races. Their ideas were influential among pro-slavery adherents in the years before the Civil War. The folding plates in the second work comprise a comparative "Ethnographic Tableau" of cranial types and a "Chart illustrative of the Geographical Distribution of Monkeys, in Relation to that of Some Inferior Types of Men."
