First edition, limited deluxe issue, quarto; number 109 of 500 copies signed by the artist on the colophon; illustrated with frontispiece and 25 full page plates mounted on gray paper with decorative borders and chapter head- and tail-pieces, original captioned tissue guards preserved; bound in publisher's full green parchment over boards elaborately decorated in gilt, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, others edges uncut (faint marginal toning; covers slightly sprung, lower corner neatly repaired with cloth, dyed green, and with the gilt ruling touched up, endpapers foxed, silk ties renewed); 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 in.

A foundational work from the golden age of book illustration, In Powder and Crinoline was Neilsen's very first commission. He went on to produce other works of supreme quality, and even worked on Disney's short Night on Bald Mountain in Fantasia. Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch, complier of The Oxford Book of English Verse, also edited many other works, from children's fairy tales to the Bible. The deluxe edition includes two additional plates not found in the standard trade version.
