With its origins in the 16th century, the Leipzig trade fair is one of the oldest in Europe. Leipzig also became one of the European centers of printing and publishing and was home to the Hochschule fur Graphic und Buchkunst (the high school for graphics and book design). Amongst the many fairs organized in Leipzig was the Reklamemesse, the advertising fair. Here Hempel depicts a curious scene in which a 19th-century dandy (his high heels leave a lot to the imagination) is reading a bulletin in the street next to a Litwass Column covered with posters. Hempel is one of the many talented designers who worked in Germany between the wars, about whom no information remains.
