O. WINSTON LINK (1914-2001)
Giant Oak, Max Meadows, Virginia. Silver print, the image measuring 15 1/2x19 1/2 inches (39.4x49.5 cm.), the sheet slightly larger, with Link's signature, negative notation NW 1643, printing date, and printing notations in pencil, and his copyright stamp with the negative notation in ink, on verso. 1957; printed 1992

A stunning example of Link's imagery that perfectly blends the speeding train through the Virginia landscape, the magnificently expansive oak tree (largely devoid of leaves, lending crisp texture and lines), and nighttime scenery in delicately, distinctly rendered tones. This print was finessed with local bleach (a technique also employed by Irving Penn, Frederick Sommer, and Emmet Gowin), and though Link determined this print to be among the best of this image, he didn't continue to conceive his work in this way, deciding it was too much effort.

Provenance: Acquired directly from the Photographer to the Present Owner, who was Link's printer
