Additional Details

6 September 1936: "Just a note to find out how you are and what is growing in your garden these days. . . . And to let you know that if you read anything about me in the papers, it isn't true. Except that I go around with Luise Rainer; that's true, and good and noble. And that I'm writing a new play is true, but when it will be done I don't know. . . ."
10 July 1940: ". . . I am finishing the script of 'Night Music' and think it is going to make an amusing and entertaining picture. However, it has not made me change my mind about anything I have said before about the movies. I have a new phrase for the usual Hollywood producer--I call him 'the autocrat of the peanuts,' or if you like, 'the keeper of the cookies.'"
9 June no year: ". . . Work on the picture going well albeit crawling. The more they crawl the more I earn, but too the more I yearn to be out of here. But it is not as bad as previous visits--this time there are no marital or physical pains. It is the superficiality that gets one down, not hunger, not cold or heat, JUST THE UNBELIEVABLE SUPERFICIALITY! Prepare my cell!"
