OGAWA, SASHICHI (died 1909)
Exquisite album containing 50 elegant photographs of Japan, including landscapes, occupationals, architectural details and intimate indoor scenes, all but one with delicate hand-coloring. Hand-colored mounted albumen prints, each approximately 8x10 1/4 inches (20.3x26 cm.), and the reverse, most with the original tissue guards, many with a caption, in English, and an inventory number in the negative or with a period caption, in ink, on the mount. Oblong folio, red lacquer covers depicting a tree and birds with delicate gilt-highlights, backstrip perished; with Ogawa's oval hand stamp on the front pastedown; all edges gilt. 1895

Additional Details

Ogawa married Kusakabe Kimbei's daughter, Matsu, and was expected to succeed his father-in-law in the business. The hand stamp in this album gives a studio location at 13 Otamachi, Yokohama and dates the piece to 1895, the only year that S. Ogawa worked from this address and the inaugural year of his own studio. As is not uncommon, some of the scenic views in this album are by Kimbei and Farsari, but all of the genre images are the work of Ogawa.
