Pleissner (1905-1983) trained as an artist at the Art Students League, New York, and at the start of World War II was commissioned as a captain in the US Air Force and stationed in the Aleutian Islands as a war artist. In 1942, he accepted a commission from the US Army inactive duty employed by Life magazine on assignment in Europe. After the war, he became one of the foremost American Sporting and Western artists.
