According to Reed/Wallace, "Despite the snail shell and initials that identify Farinati as a designer of this image, it is a composition that suggests several other sources. Seated on the ground beneath a tree, the Virgin, bowing her head and displaying a sharp classical profile, was derived from a lost painting by Titian, known from several extant contemporary prints" (Italian Etchers of the Renaissance and BaroqueBoston, 1989, page 65).
