ORAZIO FARINATI
Madonna and Child with St. John the Baptist in a Landscape.

Etching, circa 1590. 163x278 mm; 6 1/2x11 inches, narrow margins. Double-headed eagle watermark. Ex-collection William Sharp (Lugt 2650, verso). A superb, richly-inked impression of this extremely scarce etching.

According to Reed/Wallace, "Despite the snail shell and initials that identify Farinati as a designer of this image, it is a composition that suggests several other sources. Seated on the ground beneath a tree, the Virgin, bowing her head and displaying a sharp classical profile, was derived from a lost painting by Titian, known from several extant contemporary prints" (Italian Etchers of the Renaissance and Baroque, Boston, 1989, page 65). Bartsch 4.
