ORTELIUS, ABRAHAM. Maris Pacifici. Double-page engraved map of the Pacific Ocean, North and South America, and part of Southeast Asia. 16x21 3/4 inches sheet size, wide margins, blank verso; nicely hand-colored; light surface soiling with several small marginal repairs. Antwerp, 1590 or later

Additional Details

State 1 of "the first printed map to be devoted to the Pacific Ocean" which is "not as available as the various versions of [Ortelius's] map of America" (Burden) as it only appeared in issues of the Theatrum after 1590. The map is important cartographically, but also highly attractive with two strapwork design cartouches and a large depiction of Ferdinand Magellan's ship, Victoria, the first to circumnavigate the globe. Burden 74; Van den Broecke 12.1.
