OSKAR KOKOSCHKA
Three color lithographs from Wiener Werkstätte.

Reiter und Segelschiff * Blumengarten * Mädchen am Fenster, each 1906-08. Each 140x90 mm; 5 1/2x3 3/4 inches (sheets), full margins. Each published by the Wiener Werkstätte, Vienna, with the printed postcard text verso. Very good impressions with fresh colors.

Among Kokoschka's (1886-1980) earliest prints were a suite of 14 postcards, including the current lot, that he produced for a larger series of over 100 postcards of young artists' work published by the Wiener Werkstätte. These three images were executed prior to and during the time Kokoschka was working on the celebrated illustrated book Die Träumenden Knaben. Their compositions align with the Austrian Secession's decorative style as well as Kokoschka's training in graphic arts at Vienna's Kunstgewerbeschule. Though they precede the expressionist work for which Kokoschka became known, the prints' harsh angles and bold colors are a harbinger of his signature style. Wingler/Welz 3, 4 and 15.
