OSKAR LASKE (1874-1951) BALKAN UND ORIENT IM BILDE. 1918.
37 1/2x24 3/4 inches, 95 1/4x63 cm. A. Berger, Vienna.
Condition A: minor creases at edges. Paper.
Born in Austria, Laske studied architecture and worked predominantly as an architect and painter, capturing genre scenes and landscapes along his travels. He became a member of the Hagenbund in 1907 and exhibited with the Vienna Secession artists in the 1920s. Laske served as an officer in World War I, then was appointed as a war artist by the K.U.K. Kriegspressequartier - Imperial and Royal War Press Bureau - under whose auspices this exhibition was held. Originally designed as a large-format lithograph, in an edition of 200, this image of Istanbul was then used to promote an exhibition of The Balkans and The Orient in Pictures at Vienna's Künstlerhaus. Under Laske's signature is the notation "orig. lith." suggesting that this image was also made on the same stone as his early print. Through the vibrancy and color of this image, one can see the comparisons often made between Laske and James Ensor.
