OSKAR MULLEY (1891-1949)

STRANDBAD STIMMER SEE KUFSTEIN. Circa 1930.

37x26 inches, 94x66 cm. W.U.B., Innsbruck.
Condition B+: restoration in margins; overpainting along repaired tears and abrasions at edges and image.

In his oil paintings, Austrian artist Mulley "applied the paint with a palette knife in overlaying layers and thus painted structured impasto paintings which echo the depicted rocks and mountains and their rough surface perfectly . . . As one of the most popular and successful artists of his time Oskar Mulley exhibited in the Künstlerhaus Wien" (https://www.oskarmulley.at/). Mulley was also a member of the Vienna Secession. While only a small handful of his posters have come up for auction in relation to the number of paintings in his oeuvre, his poster designs exude the same confidence and boldness of color and outline as his early palette-knife artworks. For this Austrian reservoir, he depicts swimmers with the lake-side Kufstein Gasthof and restaurant visible in the background.
