Osler was famously a gifter of books, to individuals and institutions, a practice that grew in magnitude and frequency in later years. In November of 1916, Osler wrote to Charles Sayle: "I send books at Xmas to about 100 of my old students, and this year I have selected your ‘Ages' . . . ."
