OTTO BAUMBERGER (1889-1961) DOELKER. 1923.
50 1/8x35 3/4 inches. Wolfsberg, Zurich.
Condition A-: minor abrasions in image.
Baumberger studied in Zurich and Munich before being hired as a lithographer by the great Swiss printing firm Wolfsberg. He became a partner in the firm in 1914. While he is mainly remembered for his collaboration with PKZ and his Sachsplakat (object posters), Baumberger was extremely versatile. In all he designed over 230 posters. He could draw a landscape for travel posters, be it geometrically Art Deco to advertise a product or use a fluid, free-style as in the case of this poster. To promote this women's shoe line launched by Bally, he depicts an elongated hand with no attempt at any realism. The shoe is more realistic, and the two images combine, surrounded by freely drawn typography, boldly standing out against the black background. The result is both delicate and elegant. Rare. Baumberger 99.
