OTTO HENRY BACHER
Entrance to the Grand Canal, Venice.

Etching on Chine collé, 1880. 185x275 mm; 7 1/4x10 3/4 inches, full margins. Signed in pencil, lower left. A very good impression.
Bacher (1856-1909), a native of Cleveland, studied there and later in Munich, where he met Frank Dureneck. Bacher followed Dureneck to Florence late in 1879 and Venice during the summer and fall of 1880, where they worked with Whistler and fell under his influence. Whistler proofed many of his Venetian etchings (see lots 29, 30 and 31) on an intaglio press that Bacher had brought with him to Venice.
