OTTO SANDER-HERWEG (1880-?) DEUTSCHLANDFLUG. 1937.
46 1/2x32 3/4 inches, 118x83 cm.
Condition B+ / B: minor restoration along sharp vertical and horizontal folds; abrasions in image.
For this week-long flying exhibition put on by the Nazi air corps, Sander-Herweg depicts a foreboding sky filled with German aircraft. They are flying over a statue of Otto Lilienthal (whose name appears on the pedestal). The statue was designed by Peter Breuer and was erected in 1914. A pioneer of early aviation, Lilienthal was known as the "Glider King," and his gliding often made it into international press stories. The Wright brothers consider him as an inspiration for their work with heavier-than-air aircraft. This is the larger format.
