Nearly 10 years into her career as a sharpshooter performing around the world, this portrait shows Oakley donning various shooting medals on the lapel of an outfit she likely made herself. David Francis Barry (1854-1934) was a photographer known for his portraits of notable figures from the American West, particularly the leaders of the Lakota people, including Chiefs Sitting Bull and Gall among many others. Barry marketed his studio as specializing in "photographs of all noted Indian chiefs" and it is likely that Annie Oakley's husband, Frank E. Butler, chose Barry as an ideal photographer to market Oakley based on his portfolio. Chief Sitting Bull admired Annie's skills, symbolically adopting, and naming her, "Little Sure Shot" in 1884.
