P. H. LOBEL SALON DES CENTS. 1897.
22x15 3/4 inches. Chaix, Paris.
Condition B+: repaired tears, creases and overpainting in top and bottom margins.
Lobel's entire artistic legacy consists of only a few lithographs and two prestigious posters, one for the print dealer Pierrefort and this one for the 31st Salon des Cent<>. It is a shame that he didn't create more work, as his style reflects an almost intimate familiarity with Toulouse-Lautrec and the precepts of the Nabis<>. Here, the layout, quality of the drawing and the masterly use of lithography (using the white of the paper to create the net) all show the marks of a first rate artist. Wine Spectator pl. 60, Salon des Cent p. 67.
