Additional Details

Milpa Alta is a borough in southeast Mexico City mostly occupied by forests and farmland. Pablo Esteban O'Higgins painted another oil on canvas of the subject, Milpa Alta dated 1976 , that was sold at Christie's, New York on November 20-21, 2015.

O'Higgins was born Paul O'Higgins and raised in the United States.  Having become Diego Rivera's assistant, O'Higgins was living in Mexico full time by 1924.  He became one of the founders of the Taller de Gráfica Popular, the revolutionary print collective in 1937.  As a muralist and a painter, O'Higgins' inspiration was also far-reaching.  In May 1940, he was the only non-Mexican artist included in the "Twenty Centuries of Mexican Art" at the Museum of Modern Art.
