PABLO PICASSO
La Colombe.

Lithograph, 1949. 545x700 mm; 21 1/2x27 1/2 inches, full margins. Signed and numbered 4/50 in pencil, lower margin. A superb impression of this very important lithograph with strong contrasts and with all the subtle tonal nuances distinct.

Mourlot, in his catalogue raisonné of Picasso's lithographs, describes the current work as "one of the most beautiful lithographs ever produced; the mellowness obtained in the plumage, of which our reproduction evokes only a faint idea, is absolutely remarkable."

This subject was so successful that it was used for the poster for the World Congress of the Peace Partisans in 1959, which was printed by Mourlot. The dove, one of Picasso's favored subjects and a symbol for peace, became an emblem for the International Peace Conference. Picasso created a number of increasingly abstracted dove compositions from the late 1940s through the 1960s, many of which were used for the conference's posters. Bloch 583; Mourlot 141.
