PABLO PICASSO
Portrait d'Olga Picasso.

Drypoint on vergé blanc mince, 1920. 150x100 mm; 5 7/8x3 7/8 inches, full margins. One of approximately only 4 artist's proofs before the steel-facing of the plate and aside from the edition of 50 with the artist's ink stamp signature. A very good, well-inked, early impression of this extremely scarce print with rich burr and no sign of wear.

Olga Stepanova Khokhlova (1891-1955) was Picasso's first wife, whom he married in 1912, and the mother of his son Paulo Picasso. She was a dancer with the Ballet Russes in Paris; Picasso met her through Sergei Diaghilev, the ballet's director.

Shortly after the birth of their son, the marriage deteriorated. They separated in the 1920s, but Picasso never conceded to a divorce. Olga died in 1955 in Cannes, France. Bloch 37; Baer 57.
