PABLO PICASSO
Quatre Sujets pour: La Barre d'Appui.

Aquatint and drypoint on thin fibrous Japan paper, 1936. 317x216 mm; 12 1/2x8 1/2 inches, full margins. First state (of 2), before the plate was cut down but after the plate was bevelled. One of only several proofs, aside from the edition of 18 (Baer notes, "Quelques épreuves non numérotées dans des collections particulières"). Signed in ink, lower right. From Paul Éluard, La barre d'appui. Published by Editions Cahiers d'Art, Paris. Ex-collection The Zwemmer Gallery, London, with the original printed and typed label; Katherine Sergava, New York; and private collection, New Jersey. A superb, well-inked impression of this extremely scarce print.

We have found only 3 impressions of this print in this issue, before the plate was cut down, at auction in the past 20 years.

Sergava (1909 or 1910-2005) danced the part of Laurey in the original Broadway version of "Oklahoma!" from 1943 to 1947. She was also a dancer with the Ballet Russe. Bloch 295a; Baer 607.
