PAL (JEAN DE PALÉOLOGUE, 1860-1942) NEW-HOWE. 1895.
57 3/4x41 1/2 inches, 147x106 cm. Paul Dupont, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses and restoration in margins and corners; repaired tears and creases in margins and image; restoration along vertical and horizontal folds.
A young lady, dressed as a Spanish torero is inexplicably pictured astride a Scottish-manufactured bicycle. In Paris in the 1890s, artists and bicycle companies strove to outdo each other in the ingenuity, and seeming surrealism of their advertising. Pal was more than happy to oblige, often creating incongruent images. Yet in spite of the tenuous connections his images often had to the products being advertised, his work must have been extremely effective, because he was continuously commissioned to design other posters.
