PAL (JEAN DE PALEOLOGUE, 1860-1942)

RAYON D'OR. Circa 1895.

48x32¼ inches, 122x82 cm. Paul Dupont, Paris.
Condition A / A-: minor expert overpainting and repaired tears in margins.

Rayon d'Or (The Golden Beam), a gaslight, is one of Pal's most famous posters. It depicts a winged woman, draped in a diaphanous shawl, drawn like a moth to the welcoming glow from a lamp. The light reflects sensuously off her naked body. It is surprising that this poster was not censored; Paris was by no means a prudish city, but this piece goes far beyond the charming girls of Chéret.
