PAL (JEAN DE PALEOLOGUE, 1860-1942) SOCIETIE DU GAZ ACETYLENE.
57 3/4x43 1/4 inches. Paul Dupont, Paris.
Condition A-: minor repaired tears in margins. Framed.
Women were clearly the source of Pal's inspiration, and he depicted them in his posters as scantily dressed as possible. In this image for lamp oil, he illustrates the incarnation of light and the symbolic image of progress as a naked women (clad only in the wisps and curls of darkness that are scattering beneath her illumination). The other forms of contemporary lighting depicted in the poster are also personified by minimally clothed female allegories. Pal seems to be thumbing his nose at the Parisian censors.
