PAL (JEAN DE PALÉOLOGUE, 1860-1942) RAYON D'OR. Circa 1895.
48x31 1/2 inches, 122x80 cm. Paul DuPont, Paris.
Condition B+: restored losses and overpainting in margins, some affecting image; creases and abrasions in margins and image; horizontal folds. Linen backed and taped to board.
Rayon d'Or (The Golden Beam), a gaslight, is perhaps Pal's most famous poster. Itdepicts a winged woman, draped in a very transparent shawl, drawn to the welcoming glow from a lamp within a gold star. The light reflects off her naked body in a sensuous and exciting way. It is surprising that this poster wasn't censored. Paris was by no means a prudish city, but this piece goes far beyond the charming girls of Chéret. Weill, p. 48, Wine Spectator, pl. 129, Maitres 1900 p. 32.
