This large oil is one of the few known landscapes the artist made while living in Paris. In addition to his well-documented fondness for the café and nightclub scene in Paris, Palmer Hayden also frequented the horse races at St. Cloud, in the western suburbs of Paris. There is another known painting of The Seine at St. Cloud in the Miriam Hayden estate. Included in his papers in the American Art Archives of the Smithsonian are also sketchbooks with drawings of St. Cloud.
