Garetto was born in Naples and moved to Paris in the 1930s. In his early career he was known as a caricaturist of actors and politicians. By 1934 he was regularly commissioned by Mehemed Fehmy Agha to design the covers for the prestigious magazine Vanity Fair. As an actively employed graphic artist he also designed some posters, this one is previously unrecorded. And no wonder, as the print run for a restaurant on the Riviera would have been extremely limited and only very locally posted. Also the modest three color palette indicates the small scale of the economy behind producing the poster. Chez Victor was obviously a trendy place in Cannes during the hey-day of the Riviera and Garetto captured the spirited essence of a waterside restaurant by utilizing a visual theme of the "message in a bottle" motif and the all surrounding blue of the Mediterranean.
