PARFUMERIE TOCHTERMANN. 1910.
46 3/4x35 1/2 inches. G. Schuh, Munich.
Condition A-: minor restoration in margins; vertical and horizontal folds.
An extraordinary image for a perfumery, of an elegantly hatted woman smelling a bouquet of flowers. Her obscured face is as much of an anticipated and pleasant mystery to the viewer as the smell of new perfume is to a customer as they enter the store. Hohlwein composed this poster as if designing a decorative frieze, in that the main image is repeated three times. The effect, enhanced by the delicate, elegant style and pastel colors, is indeed eye-catching. The figures, as well as the background, are composed of a pattern of repeating swirls, adding a sense of vibration to the image, and stylized roses complete the geometric organization of this almost hypnotic piece. Quite unusual for Hohlwein's work, he only used this style on one other poster, and that was in 1914 for Kwarmon Cigarettes. DFP III, 1384, Masters, p. 148.
