PASETTI (DATES UNKNOWN) ISI TE-JE. 1925.
37 1/4x28 inches, 95 1/2x71 cm. C. Wolf . Sohn, Munich.
Condition B+: repaired tears in margins and image; restoration along sharp vertical and horizontal folds.
This poster poses a double mystery, as both the artist and the dancer being advertised are virtually unknown. No information can be found on the artist, and all that remains of the career of Isi Te-Je is a reference in the 1920 German book Der Tanz als Kunstwerk, along with other lesser known dancers. That the poster was printed in Munich, however, seems appropriate as the city was home to a pervasive decadent underground lifestyle, populated with bizarre clubs and improbable acts; a world that Walter Schnackenberg so vividly captured in his posters. Here, the performer is depicted as a wraith, covered in a sheet and wearing a mask, in somber colors that only add to the pervasive enigmatic feeling of the image.
