Additional Details

rare first edition, first printing. inscribed and signed by patri: on preliminary leaf: "Book 146 / Giacomo Patri / To Mrs. Morris / a real Friend." Patri's work, one of the great graphic "novels without words" of the Depression Era (along with work by Frans Masereel and Lynd Ward), was used as a promotional piece by the labor movement. It chronicled the aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash and was intended to motivate white-collar workers to unionize. Following World War II, he taught at the California Labor School in San Francisco which closed in the 1950s under the pressures of McCarthyism.

White Collar was issued in a second printing in 1940 with an Introduction by Rockwell Kent and with a different cover illustration. All editions are fairly scarce and only 2 institutions hold this first printing.
