Feiffer commentary: Abrams editor Charlie Kochman introduced me to Patrick. Patrick was always a big fan of mine. I remember an evening in New York where he and his wife, Karen and I spent the evening drinking and talking comics and having a wonderful time. He is a comics nerd and loves the more eccentric and interesting aspects of them. He's a huge fan of Herriman, which I never was. He has a strip called "Mutts" which has more cats than dogs, and it makes no sense at all. I think "Mutts" is just a very unique and original feature that allows Patrick, six days a week and Sunday to play. It's his playpen and what he plays at is a comic which is about comics history. It's like a comics fan doing his own comic strip, with references to the cartoonists that he loves. He's a lovely fellow. He also does these large comic volumes that frees him to play with comics form in an extended and more varied than his daily "Mutts" strip. Its love for varied, wildly imaginative pages. He is, at one and the same time, a brilliant comics artist, and a historian of the form. His pure play, and serious art clinging happily together. Patrick is an original, one of the best.
