Patrick Nagel's redefined 1980s Art Deco style became an iconic visual of the decade. Among his favorite subjects was the Canadian actress and model Shannon Tweed. He made several images of her, including an acrylic painting of this drawing. Nagel's large-scale artworks on board are uncommon; he created only a few of them, primarily for his major exhibition at Dyansen Gallery in New York City.

At the time of its creation in 1983, Tweed's career and life were reaching new heights; she was living in the Playboy Mansion with Hugh Hefner after having won the title of Playmate of the Year for 1982, began appearing in films (she would become famous in the erotic thriller genre), and met her future husband, rock star Gene Simmons, bassist and vocalist of the band Kiss. Between 2006-2012, the two became reality television stars with Gene Simmons Family Jewels, the A&E series that portrayed the life of her family.
